Workshop Preparation
During English 1101, we did plenty of workshops that help from time to time because when a person doesn't understand what to write, reading another person essay helps. Personally I don't like workshops because some people don't really do the essay and steal ideas from other people. When I did workshops some of my peers didn't write anything and was unprepared. When people graded my essay i kind of find it useful when they give suggestions that I can go back to revise, but if they just say its all fine than thats no help to me. I like having a electronic copy of the essay than a hardcopy because when some people write comments, its hard to read.
Some differences between editing and revision is edit is about correcting grammar issues, sentence structure, fragments, and modifying what you wrote. While revision is taking the essay as a whole and seeing what paragraphs can be alter or moved to make the paper sound better. Also add extra sentences to get more or build on an idea. It is important to do both because going over a paper one time is not enough to find all the grammar issues, and revising helps alot when a person needs to elaborate on an idea more. I think revising is more important than editing because a person needs to revise over their paper consistently, so that he/she can portray her thoughts with clarity.
Some of my concerns with peer work shopping is having group members actually reading my paper. I want to get feedback and suggestions to improve my paper, not just a "it looks great" comment. Also I hope that my peer actually did the summary because in the past, my other peers wrote nothing, so i spent half the class doing nothing.
One suggestion that Straub stated was putting comments in the margin and at the end of the essay. (Straub, Richard. “Responding-Really Responding-to Other Students’ Writing, Pg. 139) It shows that the reader is not limited to how much they can write. The second suggestion was how much to comment, because instead of writing short sentences, they should give more detail and overload your paper with comments to show that their not hold anything back. (Straub, Richard. “Responding-Really Responding-to Other Students’ Writing, Pg. 140)
